Prepare for the 2024 African American Read-In

The annual African American Read-In will be taking place during February 2024. The Read-In was originally conceived in 1990 to ensure that literacy formed an integral part of Black History Month, which takes place in February each year.

NEHS encourages chapters to plan and organize a Read-In at their school and/or within their local communities. As the National Council of Teachers of English notes, “Hosting an event can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book or as elaborate as arranging public readings and media presentations that feature professional African American writers.”

A well-organized Read-In, planned by an NEHS Chapter, may form a significant part of an NEHS Chapter Spotlight application in the Community Engagement and/or Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion categories.
