Outstanding Chapter Awards

Outstanding Ch-082818

National English Honor Society’s Outstanding Chapter Awards are designed to recognize local chapters that have exhibited outstanding motivation, creativity, and service in the preceding year. Award recipients will receive a check for $250 and a plaque. Winning chapters will also be highlighted in the NEHS Museletter blog this fall.

This year’s Outstanding Chapter Award goes to Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, MD. Among the projects done by the chapter include:

  1. tutoring local elementary students, collaborating with teachers on a Homework Club to support academically struggling 4th and 5th graders;
  2. working with other organizations at Quince Orchard for a December program called “The Giving Tree,” named for Shel Silverstein‘s children’s book;
  3. celebrating Shakespeare’s birthday with “Celebrate a Trifle,” complete with mini trifles;
  4. making care packages for at-risk 9th graders and then tutoring those same students at lunchtime; and
  5. establishing an online writing center to tutor students in all disciplines as they worked on assigned writing.

The Quince Orchard Chapter is a fine example of the amazing work being done by so many NEHS Chapters! Congratulations to Advisors Audrey Boettcher, Brian Annear, Linda Leslie, and all the student members at Quince Orchard, chartered since 2008.
