Merit Scholarship Essay Prompts

041619-Common Reader

The prompts for the Merit Scholarships have been published. NEHS members interested in applying for this category must have read the 2020 Common Reader, A Place for Us, by Fatima Farheen Mirza, and will then select one of the prompts with which to frame their analysis of the text. Note as well that all applicants will also be required to respond to two general questions:

  1. Briefly share your thoughts about the importance of English studies and the liberal arts—literature, writing, viewing, speaking—in today’s society.
  2. Explain how your involvement in NEHS has reflected the NEHS motto “Gelast Sceal Mid Are” (Old English for “duty goes with honor”).
