Scholarships Student Awards

Honorable Mention Scholarship Winners for 2012-2013

Each year, NEHS establishes a pool of money to recognize the students who have submitted noteworthy essays based on the society’s Common Reader. The following students shared the $1,000 award.

Dimitria has always had a passion for English and writing and is happy to say English has withstood the test of high school and remained her favorite subject all four years. She has been involved with National English Honors Society since her sophomore year and is proud to say she was elected to be one of her school’s chapter’s six officers for the club. Dimitria plans to attend the University of Georgia in fall of 2013 with the intended major of Business.

Genevieve is honored to have recieved the NEHS Honorable Mention, as English is a subject that she takes great pleasure in. She is well-versed in both classic and modern fiction as well as an aspiring writer. Although her main interests (and major) reside in the biological sciences, she hopes to be able to reconcile Biology and English in her future career as a teacher of Biology in the high school setting, her rationale being that a strong grasp of the nuances of language is essential to communicating concepts clearly and effectively, which is the mark of a great teacher.

Evelyn Torres-Alfaro is a senior at Linganore High School in Frederick, Maryland. During her years in high school, she was a member of the varsity field hockey, basketball, and softball teams. This year, Evelyn is the president of the National Spanish Honor Society, the vice president of the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society, and a member of several other honor society chapters within her high school. Next fall, Evelyn will be attending Johns Hopkins University to pursue degrees in both civil and environmental engineering. She also plan to minor in the Spanish language.
