Black History Month

012919-Black History Month

As mentioned in the January 15 NEHSXpress, the African American Read-In, promoted by National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), has become an integral part of Black History Month. This year’s theme is “Black Migration,” highlighting the historic movement of African Americans to the industrialized North.

NEHS chapters might collaborate with social studies departments by creating displays, highlighting novels by such authors as Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison, Jacqueline Woodson, Jesmyn Ward, Colson Whitehead, and Zora Neale Hurston. Suggestions for activities may also be found at ReadWriteThink and NCTE offers collections of prints and posters on Pinterest.

NEHS wants to know how your chapter will be celebrating Black History Month. Send your short articles and photos to NEHS Director Dave Wendelin or to Katie Mudd, Director of Social Media Strategies to be publicized on NEHS Museletter.
